The story behind the name
Legend of Thai dragons
The nāga sleeps in the river, guards the gates of the temple, and calls the rain up out of the water.
The dragon, or serpent, has a long association with Buddhism, and carries a slightly different meaning in each country of South East Asia.
Over 94% of Thais are Theravada Buddhists. Thai dragons, or Phaya Naga, are nāga — mythical serpent-like creatures believed by Isan locals to live in the Mekong River and its estuaries. The Thai dragon protects temples, brings forth water, and is associated with wisdom and longevity.
Thai dragons represent magical or supernatural powers.
Thailand shares cultural and historical heritage with Laos and Cambodia, which makes Thai dragons quite unique. Lao mythology maintains that the Naga are the protectors of Vientiane, and by extension of the Lao state. Tibetan dragons, meanwhile, are protectors of Buddhism, whose thunderous voices awaken us from delusion.
It is the feeling we hope you take from the room: quiet, warm, unhurried — and a little more awake than when you arrived.
